UFC to Return to Saskatchewan this Summer
It’s been five years since the UFC made a stop in the Great White North. However, that will soon change. Plans are underway to change that, and if all goes well, we might see a few UFC fights this June. The promoter is closing in on venues in Saskatoon and Saskatchewan. It’s hoped that an event in one of the province’s most prominent cities will pull a huge crowd. The name of the event is also yet to be confirmed. But, various sources hint at ESPN.
Confirmed Fights
The UFC has slated two fights in their June 20th return to the region. These preliminary fights will feature:
- Taila Santos vs Gillian Robertson
- Oskar Piechota vs Marc-Andre Barriault
Robertson is looking to improve her UFC 11-4 record. She’s also looking into bouncing back to her winning streak that was disrupted by a loss in October by Maycee Barber. Barriault, on the other hand, hopes to go back to his winning ways after three consecutive defeats in the octagon.
Talia Santos will provide a stiff challenge to the Canadian. This Brazilian flyweight fighter comes into this bout with an impressive record of 15 wins and just one loss. Santos previous match ended in a loss after a split decision against Mara Rorella in 2019. Therefore, both women have something to prove this June.
Former cage fighter, Oskar Piechota, is also entering the octagon after a streak of three defeats. He’ll offer Barriault a stiff challenge because he also recorded 11 wins in his first professional fights. This record includes a 2-0 streak over Tim Williams and Jonathan Wilson.
Previous Events
The previous UFC event hosted in the region ended failed to live up to the expectations of the Saskatchewan crowd. Charles Oliviera sustained a strange throat injury, only 99 seconds into the fight. The judges awarded the match to Max Holloway, ending the event in a less-than-ideal-manner. Fans hope for a better showcase this time around.
